The Vision Behind the Studio

When Primalux set out to create Kelowna’s first Dolby Atmos recording studio, every detail needed to serve both precision and inspiration. The goal was to craft a space that translated creative ideas into immersive, three-dimensional sound, while maintaining a calm, refined atmosphere that encourages focus and flow.

Sound Camel was brought in to design and build an acoustic environment capable of meeting Dolby’s strict technical requirements without compromising the character of the room. From early planning through final installation, the emphasis was on achieving clarity and control while maintaining a natural, open listening environment.

Crafting the Acoustic Experience

Every Dolby Atmos studio depends on a careful balance between technical control and design integrity. For this project, each acoustic panel was custom-built and wrapped in Duvaltex Anchorage Shadow, a performance textile selected for its durability, soft architectural texture and acoustic transparency. The fabric allows sound to pass freely through the surface so the absorptive core can do its work. This helps preserve tonal balance and creates the stable listening conditions engineers rely on for precise spatial mixing.

Speaker placement and mounting were then finalized, followed by multichannel calibration using Sonarworks, ensuring the monitoring system translated accurately within the finished acoustic environment.

Balancing Aesthetics and Acoustics

With roughly 25% wall and ceiling coverage, the panels were strategically placed to manage reflections and reverberation without dulling the room’s natural energy. The Anchorage fabric provided a consistent matte finish that holds up under both direct lighting and daily use, ensuring the room looks as clean and professional as it sounds.

The Hybrid Panel System

To optimize both isolation and clarity, window and door panels were built with a hybrid design, absorbing sound energy at the surface while reducing transmission through the structure behind. The result is a cohesive acoustical solution that unites technical performance and interior design, showcasing how material innovation can transform recording environments.

Why Duvaltex Anchorage

For high-performance recording and post-production spaces, Duvaltex Anchorage offers:

Acoustic transparency: enabling full-frequency sound absorption without muffling detail
Durability: resisting stretching, impact and wear over time
Sustainability: made in Canada with a focus on responsible manufacturing and reduced environmental impact

Results

The completed Primalux Dolby Atmos Studio delivers an immersive, acoustically balanced environment that meets Dolby certification standards while remaining comfortable and inspiring to work in. The studio regularly hosts ‘Song Surge’, an intensive program where artists age 8 and up write, record, mix, master and release a song in just one week using the entire studio as a musical instrument.

Through thoughtful design, material selection and execution by Sound Camel in Kelowna, the project demonstrates how well-chosen acoustic systems and textiles can help define the future of studio design, where sound, form and function converge.
